Last spring, Berkeley author Adam Hochschild gave an OLLI class, “Behind the Scenes for History Lovers” about the content and writing process of four of his books. He returns on Oct. 2 to do the same for his most recent book, the 2022 American Midnight: The Great War, a Violent Peace, and Democracy’s Forgotten Crisis, winner of the Gold Medal for Nonfiction of the California Book Awards. Following his presentation, he will be interviewed about the body of his work by San Francisco author and editor Todd Oppenheimer.

On Oct. 9, his wife Arlie Russell Hochschild, professor emerita of sociology at Berkeley, will present her latest book, Stolen Pride: Loss, Shame, and the Rise of the Right. It is based on half a dozen years of intensive research in the heart of Trump country, Appalachian Kentucky. As with her previous book, the bestselling Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right, a finalist for the National Book Award, Hochschild probes deep into the life stories of her subjects. Following her introduction of Stolen Pride, she will be interviewed by Bay Area journalist Deirdre English.
